On May 9, 2018, multi-instrumentalist and music historian Tim Avalon, guitarist Susan Farley, and multi-instrumentalist Jamie Weems presented “The Differences between Bluegrass and Old Time Music” as part of the History Is Lunch series. The program was co-sponsored by the Mississippi Historical Society. “Although casual music fans might not know the difference, bluegrass and Old Time music are not the same,” Avalon said. “Old Time music came to the United States as the traditions from Ireland, Scotland, and other European countries. Those immigrants brought instruments that form the basic sound of Old Time—especially the fiddle.”
